Why Your Business Appears in Google AI Overviews but Gets Few Website Clicks

Direct answer

AI Overviews often answer a customer's question directly on Google's results page, so fewer people click through to websites — even the ones cited. To turn that visibility into leads, give people a reason to visit: go deeper than the summary, make your next step obvious, keep your business facts consistent and measure leads, not just traffic.

What an AI Overview actually is

An AI Overview is a short, AI-generated summary that Google shows above many search results. It pulls information from pages in Google's index and usually links to several of them as sources. Google says the same SEO fundamentals apply to AI features and that there are no special extra requirements to appear in them.

For a business owner, that means two things can be true at once. Your content can help shape the answer customers read, and those same customers may never need to visit your website to get it.

Why visibility does not automatically become clicks

In a Pew Research Center analysis of real browsing data from 900 U.S. adults in March 2025, users clicked a traditional search result on about 8% of visits to pages that showed an AI summary, compared with about 15% on pages without one. Clicks on links inside the AI summary itself happened on about 1% of visits. These are observed patterns, not proof that AI summaries alone caused the difference — the searches that produce summaries may also differ in other ways.

One likely reason is simple: when a summary already answers the question, some people may stop there. Pew also found that question-style and longer, more conversational searches were more likely to produce an AI summary — the kind of searches customers often use when researching a local service.

Common reasons visible businesses get few clicks

  • Your page answers only the basic question, so the AI summary fully replaces it.
  • Your business name appears in the answer, but nothing tells the reader what makes you the right choice.
  • The page the AI links to is not the page that converts — for example, a general blog post with no clear next step.
  • Contact details, service areas and offers are hard to find or inconsistent across your website and profiles.
  • The page loads slowly or reads poorly on a phone, so visitors who do click leave quickly.

How to turn AI visibility into customer engagement

1. Answer the first question, then go deeper

Lead with a short, direct answer so AI systems can understand and cite you. Then give the detail a summary cannot: local specifics, how your process works, pricing factors, timelines and what customers should prepare.

2. Make the next step obvious

Every page that could be cited should include one clear action, such as calling, booking a consultation or requesting an assessment. Place it near the top and again at the end.

3. Show who you are and where you work

State your business name, services and service areas the same way everywhere — on your website, your Google Business Profile and other listings. Consistent facts make it easier for search systems and customers to trust that the business they read about is yours.

4. Build pages around real customer questions

Group related questions into helpful pages with clear headings and short answers. Pages written for the specific decisions your customers face give people a reason to click through for the full picture.

5. Measure what happens after the visit

Track calls, form submissions and booking requests, not just traffic. Google Search Console reports search performance, and your own lead records show whether visitors are becoming customers.

  • Each key page opens with a clear, direct answer.
  • Each key page has one obvious call to action.
  • Business name, services and service areas match across the web.
  • Pages load quickly and read well on a phone.
  • Leads, not only visits, are being tracked.

What AEO can and cannot do

Answer Engine Optimization helps AI systems understand your business clearly and helps your pages earn a place in AI-generated answers. It cannot guarantee that any AI system will cite or recommend you, and it cannot force people to click. What it can do is make sure that when your business does appear, the people who want more have a clear, trustworthy place to go next.
